Introduction
Wuhan University is a national university situated in Wuhan in the Hubei province of the People’s Republic of China. After a general reshuffle of the colleges and departments of the higher educational institutions throughout China in 1952, the university became a university of liberal arts and sciences and it went under the direct control of the Ministry of Higher Education of the country. This institute of higher learning is included in Project 985 as well as Project 211 and is included in the list of universities that receive substantial state funds. With imposing buildings combining both Chinese and western styles of architecture, this university, covering an area of 5508 mu , located on Luojia Hill, is considered to be one of the most impressive campuses in China.
Tracing The Roots
The university has been in existence since the later part of the reign of the Qing Dynasty, when in November 29, 1893, it was founded with the name Ziqiang Institute. In course of time, it has changed name several times. Finally in July 1928, it was named as the National Wuhan University. Incidentally this prestigious university happens to be one among the first group of national universities in modern China. In August 2, 2000, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China approved the merger of the former Wuhan University, the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering (WUHEE), the former Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping (WTUSM) and the former Hubei Medical University (HBMU). This merger resulted in the establishment of the new Wuhan University.
Motto
The motto of the university is自强 弘毅 求是 拓新. When translated into English, it reads as “Strength through self-renewal, strive to persevere, aspire for the truth, toil to discover”.
Collaboration With Foreign Universities
The Wuhan University has entered into collaborative agreements with more than 300 universities and research institutes across 40 countries and regions of the globe. In 2009, the School of Information Management at Wuhan University signed an agreement of cooperation with the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Denmark. The university has also entered into a collaboration with Duke university and the city of Kunshan to build its China campus, to be known as Duke-Kunshan University .
Library
The Wuhan university libraries boast of an astounding 5.4 million volumes on varied subjects and subscriptions to more than 10,000 Chinese and foreign periodicals.
Ranking
This seat of higher learning in the People’s Republic of China has over the years, managed to find place among the rank holders among universities in the world. In 2011, it was ranked between 351-400 in the world by Times Higher Education. The QS World University Rankings ranked it between 451-500 in the world and ranked it 79 in Asia, in 2012. The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked it between 401-500.
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province, People’s Republic of China, and is the most populous city in Central China. It lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain at the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze and Han rivers. Arising out of the conglomeration of three cities, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, Wuhan is known as “the nine provinces’ leading thoroughfare”; it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city. Because of its key role in domestic transportation, Wuhan was sometimes referred to as the “Chicago of China.”
Holding sub-provincial status, Wuhan is recognized as the political, economic, financial, cultural, educational and transportation center of central China. The city of Wuhan, first termed as such in 1927, has a population of 10,220,000 people (as of 2013). In the 1920s, Wuhan was the national capital of a leftist Kuomintang (KMT) government led by Wang Jingwei in opposition to Chiang Kai-shek, as well as wartime capital in 1937. At the 2010 census, its built-up (or metro) area made of 8 out of 10 urban districts (all but Xinzhou and Hannan not yet conurbated) was home to 8,821,658 inhabitants. We should mention that Hanchuan City in Xiaogan and Huarong District in Ezhou are being conurbated within a few time as urbanisation grows.
Railways
Presently, the city of Wuhan is served by three major railway stations: the Hankou Railway Station in Hankou, the Wuchang Railway Station in Wuchang, and the new Wuhan Railway Station, located in a newly developed area east of the East Lake (Hongshan District). As the stations are many miles apart, it is important for passengers to be aware of the particular station(s) used by a particular train.
Public transit
When Wuhan Metro opened in September 2004, Wuhan became the fifth Chinese city with a metro system (after Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou). The first 10.2 kilometres (6.3 mi)-long line (10 stations) is an elevated rail (and therefore called ‘light rail’ in Chinese terminology).
Airport
Opened in April 1995, Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is one of the busiest airports in central China and it is located 26 kilometres (16 mi) north of Wuhan. It has also been selected as China’s fourth international hub airport after Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai-Pudong and Guangzhou Baiyun. A second terminal was completed in March 2008, having been started in February 2005 with an investment of CNY 3.372 billion.
