TRACING ITS ROOTS
The city of Wenzhou dates back to about 2000 BC, when it acquired fame for its pottery. It was known as the Kingdom of Dongou during the 2nd century BC. The city acquired the current name in 675 AD, when it was promoted to a prefecture level city during the rule of the Tang dynasty. The city’s traditional role has been that of a port that connected the interior mountainous region of Southern Zhejiang province to the rest of the country. During the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-1942, Wenzhou port played an important role by virtue of being one of the few Chinese ports that were still under the Chinese control. Though its importance declined during the later years of the war, it again gained prominence in 1955 after the reestablishment of coastal trade along the Zhejiang coast.
ECONOMY
After initiation of reforms and opening up of the Chinese economy, Wenzhou has taken the lead in developing the private economy of China. The main industries of the city are papermaking, food processing, and building materials, production of farm machinery.
