Qingdao University (QDU) is a key provincial research university located in Qingdao, China. Qingdao University traces its origin to 1909, when Deutsch-Chinesische Hochschule(German-Chinese College), the oldest predecessor institution of Qingdao University, was jointly established by the Chinese and German governments in Qingdao. In 1993, the former Qingdao University, Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Textile Engineering College, and Qingdao Normal College, four higher education institutions with glorious history, merged to form the new Qingdao University. At present, QU is one of the best comprehensive universities in Shandong Province, recognized as a member of the national “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program.” With a strong profile in Medical Sciences, Textile and Design, Business, and liberal arts, QU serves 32,300 full-time undergraduate students, 7,400 graduate students, and 1,100 international students. Qingdao University covers an area of 3.8 km² and includes five campuses in different parts of Qingdao, with the main campus located in the east part of Shinan District. Over 100 research labs, teaching and research facilities are well-equipped. The university library houses a collection of over 3,550,000 volumes.
The university offers a wide range of disciplines and is accredited to grant students bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. With 22 colleges, Qingdao University offers 94 different undergraduate programs. The graduate school is composed of 35 doctoral programs and 178 master’s programs. Currently, more than 40,000 students are enrolled at QU. More than 1,000 international students from over 40 different countries now study at QU each year. Qingdao University is an authorized HSK Testing Center (the primary Chinese proficiency test) and proctors HSK tests at different levels including HSK Basic, HSK Elementary-Intermediate, and HSK Advanced. The Overseas Chinese Bureau of the State Council has designated Qingdao University as an “Education Center of Chinese Language and Culture”. Qingdao University is now a paragon of quality in Chinese language and culture education.
It has about 37.000 students, from which over 5.000 are postgraduate students, and over 1.000 are international students. Since 1980, Qingdao University has received over 10.000 students from more than 60 countries. The university also has a group of reputed scholars known at home and abroad, of which 900 are professors. There are 23 academicians (including adjunct academicians) who are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Qingdao is a major city in eastern Shandong Province, Eastern China. Administered at the sub-provincial level, Qingdao has jurisdiction over seven districts and five county-level cities. According to the 2010 census, the built-up (or metro) area made up of 6 urban districts and Jimo City had 5,764,384 million inhabitants, while the total population of the sub-provincial city is up to 8.71 million. Lying across the Shandong Peninsula and looking out to the Yellow Sea, it borders Yantai to the northeast, Weifang to the west and Rizhao to the southwest. Qi-ng in Chinese means “green” or “lush”, while da(o means “island”.
Qingdao is a major seaport, naval base, and industrial centre. The world’s longest sea bridge, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, links the main urban area of Qingdao with Huangdao district, straddling the Jiaozhou Bay sea areas. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery, the second largest brewery in China.
In 2007, Qingdao was named as among China’s top ten cities by the Chinese Cities Brand Value Report, which was released at the 2007 Beijing Summit of China Cities Forum. In 2009, Qingdao was named China’s most livable city by the Chinese Institute of City Competitiveness.
Cuisine
Seafood is a typical delicacy of the coastal city, divided into two categories: “Great Seafood” including sea cucumbers, abalones, shark’s fin, prawns, crabs, conch, and some big fish, and “Little Seafood” comprising squid, shrimps, octopus, oysters, razor clams, clams, periwinkles, yellow croakers, etc. Generally, fresh seafood is served in every hotel.
The distinctive cuisine of the area is Lu Cai, the Shandong regional style.

Road
The total lengths of operational highways is 14,326 km (8,902 mi), including 700 km (430 mi) Expressways. At the present, the traffic mileage is more than 6.02 billion km (3.74 billion mi) per year. In June 30, 2011, the longest bridge over water opened in Qingdao. The bridge, Haiwan Bridge, is 26.4 miles (42.5 km) long and connects Qingdao to an offshore island, Huangdao. It would easily cross the English Channel and is almost three miles (4.8 km) longer than the previous record-holder, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the American state of Louisiana.
Marine
The Orient Ferry connects Qingdao with Shimonoseki, Japan. There are two ferry lines connecting Qingdao with South Korea. The New Golden Bridge II operates between Qingdao and Incheon, and the Blue Sea Ferry operates between Qingdao and Gunsan.
Intercity rail
Qingdao’s railway development was picked up during the late 1990s. It is at the beginning of the Jiaoji Railway. Qingdao’s city proper has some major railway stations, Qingdao Station, Sifang Station, Cangkou Station, Great-Seaport Station, etc.

Qingdao’s public traffic owns 5283 large and medium-sized buses, CNG buses as of 2012.There are also 136 trolleybuses as of 2012. There are 260 bus routes and 3 trolleybus routes as of 2012.
