Nankai University (NKU) is a national public university located in Tianjin of the People’s Republic of China The university is directly administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is a member of the Nankai serial schools and is regarded as one of the topmost universities in China.
MOTTO
The motto of the university in the Chinese language is 允公允能,日新月异. Translated into English, it reads as “Commitment to society, persistent self-improvement”.
TRACING ITS ROOTS
The university was set up way back in 1919, as a private institution and was then run with financial aid received from foreign charitable trusts and local entrepreneurs. Initially there were only 96 students and teaching was imparted only in liberal arts, science, and business. Towards 1937, Nankai had diversified into a university consisting of 3 colleges, 13 departments, and 2 research institutes, with 429 students pursuing their studies under the guidance of 110 faculty and staff members. This prestigious university suffered severe damages during the Sino-Japanese War of 1937. In 1946, the government declared Nankai as a national university.
With the formation of the People’s Republic of China, Nankai became a comprehensive university with emphasis on the arts and sciences, with 14 departments and 3 professional specialties in total. The smooth functioning of the university was interrupted during the Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1966 to 1976 and also due to the devastating earthquake of 1976, which caused damage to the buildings of the institution. However this seat of higher learning again flourished after 1980, when China opened its doors for reforms.
DEGREES OFFERED
NKU offers a total of 79 bachelor’s degree programs, 231 master’s degree programs, and 172 Ph.D. programs. At present there are approximately 12,000 undergraduate students and 11,000 graduate students pursuing their studies at the university. Deemed as the entry point to the capital of the People’s Republic of China, Tianjin has served as a principal seaport since the middle part of the 19th century. In fact, Tianjin is the largest coastal city in North China. A portion of the Bohai Economic Rim, Tianjin is among the five national central cities of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
NOMENCLATURES
There are many theories about the origin of the nomenclature ‘Tianjin’. The term appeared first in some of the verses of prominent nationalist poet Qu Yuan of the Chu State during the Warring States period. The word is also found in the famed Book of Sui as the name of a star in the age-old Chinese astronomical system. The History of the Jin has the word in the River record. The most plausible view appears to be in the Name Giving of the Emperor. Its literal connotation is “the ferry site of Emperor (The Son of Heaven)”. The name is believed to have been given by Emperor Yongle – one of the princes of Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty. Prior to becoming the emperor, Prince Yongle crossed swords with Zhu Yunwen, who was the grandson of Emperor Hongwu and also the successor of Emperor Taizu. He used river Gu in Tianjin to move away from the place. And, once he was enthroned, he named the site ‘Tianjin’.
INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL HUB
A dual-core urban center, the principal metropolitan area encompassing also the old city is situated beside river Hai that links two other rivers, namely Yangtze and Yellow through the Grand Canal. Situated to the east of the old city is Binhai – the newly established urban hub on the Bohai Sea coast. This region has evolved as an industrial and commercial unit. More than 285 Fortune 500 companies have established their bases here since the fag end of 2010.
ADMINISTRATION
Directly administered by the Central Government, it is one of the country’s five national central urban locales. It has Beijing Municipality and the Hebei Province as neighbors. The Bohai Gulf of the Yellow Sea is to its east.
POPULATION
Tianjin has the fourth largest with reference to urban population in China. The other three metropolises in an ascending order are Guangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai.
TRACING THE ROOTS
The land portion of Tianjin was formed in the hoary days by the sediments deposited by several rivers that meet the sea at the Bohai Gulf. At a particular phase, the Yellow River also met the sea at this point. This coastal region witnessed a rapid rise in popularity and its development got a fillip after the opening of the Grand Canal during the Sui Dynasty. The place was known as “Zhigu” or “Straight Port” till 1404. It was in that very year that Emperor Yongle renamed the place ‘Tianjin’. Subsequently, the Tianjin Fort was established there.
