TRACING ITS ROOTS
The city of Wenzhou dates back to about 2000 BC, when it acquired fame for its pottery. It was known as the Kingdom of Dongou during the 2nd century BC. The city acquired the current name in 675 AD, when it was promoted to a prefecture level city during the rule of the Tang dynasty. The city’s traditional role has been that of a port that connected the interior mountainous region of Southern Zhejiang province to the rest of the country. During the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-1942, Wenzhou port played an important role by virtue of being one of the few Chinese ports that were still under the Chinese control. Though its importance declined during the later years of the war, it again gained prominence in 1955 after the reestablishment of coastal trade along the Zhejiang coast.
After initiation of reforms and opening up of the Chinese economy, Wenzhou has taken the lead in developing the private economy of China. Majority of the individuals and families were engaged in household manufacturing, as a result of which Up till now, Wenzhou has a total of 240,000 individually-owned commercial and industrial units and 130,000 private enterprises. Out of these, 180 are group companies, 4 of these finds place among China’s top 500 enterprises and 36 among national 500 top private enterprises. The flourishing of private economy in Wenzhou has given rise to the “Wenzhou Economic Model”, which has set an example in the modernization drive of the People’s Republic of China. The main industries of the city are papermaking, food processing, and building materials, production of farm machinery. Since the 1990s, manufacturing of low-voltage electric appliances became a major industry in Wenzhou, with some of the large private enterprises setting up joint ventures with GE and Schneider. The city also exports various items including foodstuffs, tea, wine, jute, timber, paper and a non-metallic mineral called Alunite. Alunite is abundantly found here and hence Wenzhou is sometimes called the “Alunite Capital of the World”.
